Gino M. Santos is one of the youngest commercial, TV, and film directors in the Philippines. He graduated with a Digital Filmmaking degree from De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde in 2008. To further hone is craft, he enrolled in filmmaking workshops at The Asia Pacific Film Institute, The Marilou Diaz- Abaya film institute, and The New York Film Academy Filmmaking workshop in Kyoto, Japan.
His knowledge of – and passion – for film at such a young age got him to be chosen as the delegate of the Philippines for the Motion Picture Association Conference held in Beijing, China. He has directed numerous short films that have garnered attention not just locally, but also internationally, in film festivals held in Berlin and Los Angeles. He is a two-time recipient of the Honorable Mention award from Gawad CCP for his short films “Ang Tangke” (The Water Tank) and an experimental film “Bangungot” (Sleep Paralysis).
His college thesis, “Labing Dalawa” (Twelve) received a Best Short Film nomination at the 35th Gawad Urian Awards – the most prestigious local award-giving body. “Every Other Time” was his short film entry to the 7th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. He directed his first full-length feature – “The Animals”– a year later, which premiered at the same prestigious festival. “The Animals” received the Best in Editing award at Cinemalaya, and continued on receiving wide recognition, such as Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Musical Score at the 36th Gawad Urian Awards, as well as international premieres in Stockholm, Malaysia, and New York City.
He co-directed his second full-length feature, entitled “Island Dreams”, with veteran director and screenwriter Aloy Adlawan. The film was an entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival – New Wave Category, and received the Most Gender Sensitive award.“#Y” was his third full-length feature which premiered at the 10th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival held August 2014. The film received a Special Citation for Best Ensemble Acting.
Gino was the director of the “The Tim Yap Show” on GMA7 for its first 5 seasons, and was also the second unit director for “Jasmine” on TV5. He is also an in-house director at Straight Shooters Media Inc. where he has worked with P&G, Jollibee, Sprite, and ETC in directing commercials. Gino’s fourth and fifth full-length feature went to production simultaneously which are “Ex with Benefits” under Skylight and Viva Films and “Lila” being his first Horror film produced by Brillante Mendoza and Solar Entertainmend Inc. for Sinag Maynila Film Festival.
Recently, he just signed a multi-picture contract with Star Cinema and is currently working on his latest film starring Piolo Pascual and Dawn Zulueta soon to air mid 2016.
